The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) describes homelessness as the state of being food and shelter insecure. More specifically, HUD considers anyone who cannot afford to rent a house—and therefore has to live with friends or extended family members, in the streets, or in other places unsuitable for human habitation, such as abandoned buildings—to be homeless. It is worth noting that homelessness affects single people (both men and women) as well as families.
